Crime victim representation

Navigating the legal process can be a traumatic experience, particularly for individuals who have suffered physical or emotional injury or financial loss as a victim of crime. Fortunately, crime victims have rights under the Missouri Constitution. This includes the right to be informed of and heard by the court at various stages of proceedings and the right to receive restitution. Crime victims are often able to work with a victim advocate in the prosecutor’s office to help ensure their rights are protected.

Crime victims may also wish to seek crime victim compensation or request an order of protection to prevent an abuser from having contact with or stalking them.

A crime victim also can consult with and be represented by an attorney of their choosing. Sometimes, crime victims may want an attorney to advocate on their behalf throughout the criminal justice process.

Crime victims also may have the ability to pursue civil remedies against the people who have harmed them that are separate from criminal prosecution.
